Carpet cleaning

Vacuum thoroughly. This is the most important step in carpet cleaning. Vacuuming removes dirt, dust, and pet hair from the carpet fibers, which will help the cleaning solution work more effectively. Be sure to vacuum in both directions, and use a brush attachment to get into the corners and edges.

Pretreat any stains. If there are any stains on your carpet, you will need to treat them before you start cleaning. For most stains, a solution of baking soda and water will work well. Sprinkle the baking soda on the stain and let it sit for 30 minutes to an hour. Then, vacuum up the baking soda. For more stubborn stains, you may need to use a commercial stain remover.
Mix the cleaning solution. You can buy a commercial carpet cleaner, or you can make your own cleaning solution using a few simple ingredients. A good homemade carpet cleaner is made with one part white vinegar and three parts water. You can also add a few drops of dish soap to the solution to help break up grease and grime.
Apply the cleaning solution. Spray the cleaning solution onto the carpet using a spray bottle. Be sure to apply the solution evenly, and don't oversaturate the carpet.
Brush the carpet. Use a carpet brush to work the cleaning solution into the carpet fibers. This will help to loosen up dirt and grime.
Blot the carpet. Use a clean, dry cloth to blot the carpet. This will help to remove the cleaning solution and dirt.
Rinse the carpet. If you used a commercial carpet cleaner, you may need to rinse the carpet with clean water. To do this, spray the carpet with clean water and then blot it dry with a clean cloth.
Air dry the carpet. Once the carpet is rinsed, it is important to air dry it completely. Do not use a hair dryer or other heat source to dry the carpet, as this could damage the fibers.
Vacuum again. Once the carpet is dry, vacuum it again to remove any remaining dirt or dust.
Here are some additional tips for cleaning your carpet:

Clean your carpet regularly, especially if you have pets or children.
Test the cleaning solution in an inconspicuous area of the carpet to make sure it does not discolor the carpet.
Be careful not to oversaturate the carpet with cleaning solution, as this can damage the fibers.
Blot the carpet frequently to remove excess moisture.
Air dry the carpet completely before using it again.
